Dua’s from the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)

15 2

The Messenger of Allah used to often seek refuge with Allah. He used to supplicate as follows: “Allahumma, inni a’udhu bika min ‘ilmin la yanfa’u, wa mindu’a’in la yusma’u, wa min qalbin la yakhsha’u, wa min nafsin la tashba’u.” – O Allah, I seek refuge with You from knowledge that is of no benefit, from a supplication that is not heard, from a heart that does not fear (You) and from a soul that is not satisfied. (Sunan Ibn Majah)

The Messenger of Allah used pray as follows: “O Allah! I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by (other) men.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6369)

Ibn ‘Abbas narrates: “The Messenger of Allah used to teach us this supplication just as he would teach us a Surah from the Qur’an: ‘Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min ‘adhabi jahannam, wa a’udhu bika min ‘adhabil-qabr, wa a’udhu bika min fitnatil-masihil-dajjal, wa a’udhu bika min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat’ – O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the torment of Hell, and I seek refuge with You from the torment of the grave, and I see refuge with you from the tribulation of False Christ, and I seek refuge with You from the trials of life and death.'” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3840)

His dua’ before sleeping

Hudhaifah (ra) reports: “Whenever the Prophet lay down for sleep at night, he would place his (right) hand under his (right) cheek and supplicate: Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya. – O Allah, with Your Name will I die and live (wake up).” And when he woke up, he would supplicate: “Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana, wa ilaihin-nushur. – All praise is due to Allah, Who has brought us back to life after He has caused us to die, and to Him is the return.” (Al-Bukhari)

His dua’ when he set out on a journey

He used to read the following verses from the Qur’an: “That you may settle yourselves upon their backs and then remember the favour of your Lord when you have settled upon them and say. ‘Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it. And indeed we, to our Lord, will [surely] return.’” (Az-Zukhruf, 43:13-14)

His dua’ after night prayer

Ibn `Abbas (ra) narrates: When the Messenger got up at night to offer prayer and finish it, he used to thank and praise Allah. Then he used to say in his invocation, “Allahumma ij`al fi qalbi nuran wa fi basari nuran, wa fi sam`i nuran, wa`an yamini nuran, wa`an yasari nuran, wa fawqi nuran, wa tahti nuran, wa amami nuran, wa khalfi nuran, waj`al li nuran.” – O Allah, bestow upon my heart light, and my ears light, my eyes light, my right side light, my left side light, my front side light, my back side light. Increase my light, increase my light, increase my light. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6316)

His dua’ while leaving his house

Umm Salamah (ra) narrates that whenever he left his house, the Prophet would say:“Allahumma inni a’udhu bika an adilla aw azilla, aw azlima aw uzlama, aw ajhala aw yujhala ‘alayya.” – O Allah, I seek refuge with You from going astray or stumbling, from wronging others or being wronged, and from behaving or being treated in an ignorant manner. (Sunan Ibn Majah 3884)

Ibn ‘Abbas (ra) says: The Messenger of Allah used to say when he was in distress: “La ilaha illallahul-Azimul-Halim. La ilaha illallahu Rabbul-‘Arshil-‘Azim. La ilaha illallahu Rabbus-samawati, wa Rabbul-ardi, wa Rabbul-‘Arshil- Karim.” – None has the right to be worshipped but Allah the Incomparably Great, the Compassionate. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah the Lord of the Mighty Throne. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah the Lord of the heavens, the Lord of the earth, and the Lord of the Honourable Throne. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

His dua’ before wearing a new cloth

When the Messenger of Allah put on a new garment he mentioned it by name, turban or shirt, and would then say: O Allah, praise be to You, as You have clothed me with it, I ask You for its good and the good of that for which it was made, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of that for which it was made. (Sunan Abi Dawud 4020)

Umm Khalid (ra) narrates: Once the Messenger of Allah was brought some garments among which was a small cloak with a border and black stripes. He said: Whom do you think to be more deserving for it? The people kept silence. He said: Bring Umm Khalid. The she was carried to him and he put it on her, saying twice: Wear it out and make it ragged. Then he went on looking at red or yellow marks on it, and said: This is sanah, sanah, Umm Khalid. [It means “beautiful” in the language of the Abyssinians.] (Sunan Abi Dawud 4024)

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3450)
